Talking Baby: Mom Shaming

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Whether it's the Jolie-Pitt bunch or Prince George, we all look at celebrity kids and dissect every aspect of their mom and dad's parenting decisions.

But do we judge celebrity moms too harshly? CBS4 Morning anchor Rhiannon Ally spoke with Sarah Bernard, BabyCenter's Lifestyle, Pop Culture and Trends contributor to find out if we all need to stop mom-shaming celebs.

Kate Winslet is at the top of the A-list. She recently earned a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But it's the Academy Award winner's personal life that grabbed headlines. Winslet married her third husband this year and had her third child. All three kids have different dads.

"It ignited a huge debate. It was pretty insulting some of the things I read people say about her," said Bernard.

One headline from the Daily Mail in the United Kingdom read "Why is Kate Winslet's love life such a mess?"

But Bernard said maybe the question should be "who are we to judge? Life happens. Things change. A lot of modern families are unconventional."

Bernard sais when our favorite celebrities have babies our attention often turns from the red carpet to the nursery.

The Kardashian family is the perfect example. Mom manager Kris Jenner is often criticized for making money off family drama. But it's Kim Kardashian people seem to love to hate.

Shortly before her daughter North West's first birthday party, Kardashian got her ears pierced. Some were outraged while others said what's the big deal.

"There are so many people in different cultures who pierce their daughter's ears just days after they're born," Bernard pointed out.

North West's first first birthday party also had some people shaking their heads. The over the top "Kidchella" party had some saying enough. But Bernard said this is exactly what Kim Kardashian is known for.

"There's no way you can expect Kim not to do anything that's not extravagant. Don't forget, she is being filmed," said Bernard.

Bernard said many moms in Hollywood love the attention while others prefer their privacy.

"Some of the moms in Hollywood tip off the paps to say 'hey, I am going to be going to the farmers market'. Some of them obviously don't feel that way and try to hide it," said Bernard.

Other moms like Kristen Bell, who's pregnant with her second child, are fighting to change the rules. She's asked celebrity magazines to stop buying photos of celebrity kids as a part of her 'No Kids Policy'.

But as long as the demand is there, Bernard said our craving for every detail of a celebrity and their children's lives likely won't change anytime soon.

"I think people will start putting up pictures of their ultrasounds. We're going to start caring earlier and earlier," said Bernard.
