Big Boost From JPMorgan Chase & Co. For High School Students
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Hundreds of paid opportunities will be up for grabs for Miami students this summer thanks to JPMorgan Chase & Co.
The financial services firm has announced that they invested $100,000 to expand Miami-Dade County Public School's (MDCPS) National Academy Foundation (NAF) summer internship program to more students this year.
The NAF is a program that helps high-school students get hands-on work experience with careers in finance, hospitality & tourism, information technology, engineering, and health sciences. This year, 500 students will get the chance to intern at places like Marriott International, Miami Children's Hospital, Perry Ellis, State Farm, and University of Miami Health System.
"It is a pleasure to partner with an organization like JPMorgan Chase & Co, who understands the importance of allowing our students to gain real-world skills through summer internships," said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. "After this experience, the students from our Academies will be better prepared to compete and to succeed in today's global economy."
Not only will students get the opportunity to train and enhance their work experience, but they could also earn college credit if they complete the program successfully.
"A first job in a promising sector can help every student in this program be ready to help our city grow, have the confidence to succeed and be inspired to lead, " said Guillermo Castillo, market leader for JPMorgan Chase in South Florida.
JPMorgan Chase & Co. also announced a $5 million investment in accelerating workforce skills locally so more candidates can effectively compete for and fill jobs available in fields like Hospitality & Leisure, Creative Design, Life Sciences, Trade & Logistics, Aviation, Information Technology and International Banking & Finance.
More than 3,000 MDCPS youth have been through a NAF internship in the last six years. Students can apply and are selected based on teacher recommendation and meeting established criteria. Students can apply for next year's internship program during their junior year in school.
