Residents Displaced After Lauderhill Apartment Fire

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - More than a dozen residents of a Lauderhill apartment building were forced from their homes early Wednesday morning after a fire erupted in one of the units.

Lauderhill firefighters say is started in the back of the building at 5719 NW 27th Court.

One unit was heavily damaged, two others have moderate damage due to smoke and water.

Resident Willie Lee said he woke up to the smell of smoke, the sound of fire engine sirens blaring, and his house on fire.

"We received several 911 calls.  Once on scene the fire spread into the attic across three apartments," said Lauderhill Division Chief Jeff Levy.

Lee lost everything. His neighbor Joseph Filmore and his family are displaced.

"We are trying to find shelter....may be awhile before we get in our homes," said Filmore.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
