Still No Motive In Killings, Fire At Fla. Mansion
TAMPA (CBSMiami/AP) — Detectives are still trying to find out why a Florida man killed his wife and teenage children then set their rented mansion on fire and killed himself.
There is no evidence of any misuse of funds at the children's private school, where Darrin Campbell volunteered as treasurer, said Carrollwood Day School spokeswoman Erma Ruffkess said Tuesday.
"As speculation naturally occurs, we have no indication there has been any financial impropriety as it relates to our school," Ruffkess said. "There are extensive checks and balances and protocols in place to ensure the security of all school bank accounts and accounting/financial records. A complete independent financial audit of the school is conducted by a professional accounting firm on an annual basis."
Investigators are conducting a financial audit on Campbell, as well as searching his computer histories and interviewing friends and family members, said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter.
"At this point, it's very meticulous," Carter said. "It could be months before we have anything, or we may never find a motive."
Campbell had been an executive for several high-profile businesses, including a stint at PODS, the mobile storage company. Harry Costello, a lawyer representing Campbell's last employer, digital services provider Vastec, said the company is not auditing his work as chief operating officer.
Authorities have said Campbell shot his wife and two teenage children in the head last week, then scattered gasoline and fireworks around their home before setting it on fire and killing himself. He had no criminal history.
The Campbells had been renting their 6,000-square-foot home from retired tennis star James Blake. The million-dollar home was located in Avila, an exclusive gated community known for its resident sports stars and CEOs.
A private service is being planned for Campbell's children, 18-year-old Colin and 15-year-old Megan, Ruffkess said.
