New Moms Can Sign Up For Health Insurance Under ACA Rules

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — New moms who don't have health insurance can still sign up through the federal marketplace even though the enrollment period is over.

Giving birth or adopting a child counts as a special enrollment circumstance. That means new parents who might have missed the March 31st enrollment deadline can still get health insurance on the new exchange under the Affordable Care Act. New parents have 60 days from the date of birth or adoption to enroll.

Feds say mental health treatment for post-partum depression, breast pumps, immunization and other preventative care are all covered.

Roughly 90 percent of Floridians qualified for a tax credit to help them pay for their plans.

The next open enrollment period for the general population is in November.
