Public Storage Facility In Miami Gardens Goes Up In Flames

MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) - Hundreds of people in Miami Gardens are holding their breath, hoping a fire didn't destroy their belongings kept in storage.

Billowing smoke rose above a storage facility in Miami Gardens around 5 PM Monday.

Some people, like Madia Henderson, who rent units at Public Storage found out about the fire when they saw the flames from the Palmetto.

Henderson rushed to the storage facility.

"I have a four-bedroom home because I'm in the middle of relocating, so that's actually what's sitting in there," said Henderson. "My bedroom set alone is like $8,000 so I'm kind of freaking out."

Henderson's belongings are insured, but she's most worried about the things she can't replace, like pictures and her kids' paintings.

For some renters, it was about the money.

"I got all my tools and equipment there," said renter David Byran. "I don't want to lose all my stuff."

Late into the night, fire investigators continued to look for the cause of the fire. Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue said putting out the fire turned out to be the easy job compared to searching every rental unit.

"There's gasoline, paint cans, ammunitions from weapons." said Fire Chief Hugh Bruger. "That stuff can really hurt our people, let alone just the mass amount of storage that's in there."

Authorities are working on notifying anyone who might have belongings stored at the unit.

Nobody was hurt in the fire.
