Jim Kelly Set To Start Chemo & Radiation Therapy This Week

NEW YORK (CBSMiami) - Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback, and former University of Miami star, Jim Kelly will begin chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer in his maxillary sinus and adjacent tissues next week, Lenox Hill Hospital said in a release Tuesday.

Jim Kelly's wife Jill wrote in a blog recently that his cancer, originally detected in his jaw, returned and is spreading.

According to Lenox Hill's statement, Kelly will receive "a single dose of chemotherapy along with concurrent daily radiation therapy treatments. The chemotherapy will be repeated as an outpatient in approximately three weeks and six weeks. The radiation therapy will be a six-week regimen."

Doctors said after chemotherapy and radiation are completed, they will wait two-to-three months to look at the cancer and then determine if surgery is needed.

Dr. Peter Constantino, executive director at Lenox Hill, said that even if chemotherapy and radiation fail in getting rid of the cancer, "his skull-base tumor remains operable."
