Pregnant Woman Shot In Miami Gardens Dies

MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) -- A woman, who was seven months pregnant, died Sunday after being shot in Miami Gardens.

Family members tell CBS4 her name was Qualecia James. She had a 4-year old daughter and was looking forward to the birth of her second baby.

According to detectives, James was a passenger in a car driving on NW 32nd Avenue near 182nd Street in Miami Gardens when the shooting happened.

"The victim's vehicle was traveling northbound on NW 32nd Avenue another vehicle came along and just started opening fire on the vehicle striking the female," explained Miami Gardens Police Detective Mike Wright.

Two other people in the car were not hurt, but James was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition where she later died.

James' mother told CBS4's Maggie Newland, the baby, a boy, was delivered. Police say the child is in critical condition.

"It hurts me so bad my daughter gone, she gone," said Qualecia James' father, Leroy James, adding, "I know everybody got to go one day, but why today? I will never figure out that answer."

He was devastated to learn what happened.

"The last thing we always tell each other 'I love you' and that's the last thing she said to me and the last thing I said to her 'I love you'."

As her family grieves, police are trying to figure out who killed Qualecia James.

"We are actively searching for any witnesses who will be able to help us out in this horrific incident. We need our neighbors to come together and start actually piecing this puzzle together," said Detective Wright.

"All I got to say to the people who done this, run forever and a day. You will get caught I promise you that," said Leroy James. "You done killed my baby girl, my firstborn. You will get caught."
