Local Artist Pleads Not Guilty In Smashing Of $1-Million Vase

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The attorney for a South Florida artist, who smashed a $1-million vase, asked for a trial by jury Tuesday after he entered a not guilty plea on behalf of his client.

Maximo Caminero is charged with criminal mischief for destroying the valuable vase at the Perez Art Museum Miami. The vase was part of a museum exhibit by noted dissident artist Ai Weiwei.

Caminero previously apologized for smashing the vase in February and told police it was to protest lack of support for local artists.

Caminero did not appear in court Tuesday.

His attorney, John De Leon, turned down the state's deal of 30 days in jail followed by 3 years probation and $50K in restitution.

De Leon said his client is presumed innocent and will fight for him in court.

His next court date is April 24th.
