MIAMI (CBSMiami) – There’s just about a day left to help George Washington Carver Middle School in Miami win part of a contest with $2 million in prize money.

GW Carver was named a finalist in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Contest. By reaching the finals, Carver Middle has already won a technology package worth $35,000.

Carver Middle is up against 15 other schools around the nation. The contest tries to raise awareness and interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). The challenge is to use what they learn in the classroom to solve community issues.

Carver students submitted a video called “Old Smokey’s Dirty Secret” that details how the students were gathering scientific evidence to compel public action on the city’s former garbage incinerator.

A total of five national winners will be named from the 15 finalists, with four of those winners being selected by a judging panel. The fifth national winner, the “Community Choice Award Winner,” will be chosen by online voting.

Voting is open through March 13, 2014.
