Parkland Man Pleads Not Guilty To Wife's Murder
FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A Parkland man who reportedly confessed to stabbing his wife to death last month during a fight after he caught her kissing another man appeared before a judge Wednesday morning.
Alrick Oral Brown entered plea of not guilty.
On Sunday, Feb. 2nd, the Broward Sheriff's Office received a call from a man who said he had accidentally stabbed his wife to death in their home at 12471 NW 78th Manor in the Heron Bay community.
When deputies arrived at the residence they were met by Brown. When asked if there was anyone else inside the home Brown, 38, reportedly replied "My wife and she is dead."
When asked who killed her, Brown replied "I did."
Inside the home, deputies found the bloody body of 53-year old Dacota Stewart-Dick, a knife clutched in her right hand. Brown's arrest report notes that Stewart-Dick had been dead for some time because rigor mortis had begun to set in.
Written on wall of the master bedroom was "I'm sorry" in Stewart-Dick's blood and "I'm sorry" was scrawled in her blood on a bathroom mirror.
When deputies escorted Brown to a sheriff's cruiser, they discovered he had a stab wound in his abdomen and several cuts on his neck. While he was being treated for his cuts, Brown reportedly told paramedics that he had waited two hours after he stabbed his wife to call 9-1-1.
The Medical Examiner determined that Stewart-Dick, who had defensive wounds on her arms, died of multiple stab wounds.
During questioning, Brown said he and his wife got into a fight because he saw her kissing another man the day before, according to the police report. He said at one point he grabbed her by her blouse to pull her close to him and that's when she stabbed him in the abdomen.
Brown reportedly told investigators after he wrestled the knife out of her grasp, she went to the kitchen and grabbed a smaller knife. He said he went after her and the two met in front of the master bedroom in the living room where he grabbed her by the shoulders and began to shake her, according to the report.
Brown said that's when his wife started stabbing him in the neck, according to the report.
Brown reportedly told investigators he was again able to get the knife out of his wife's hand and then used it to stab her.
When she asked him "What are you doing?" Brown reportedly told her he was stabbing her because she had stabbed him.
According to Brown, his wife fell to the floor and he refused to help her up. He then told investigators that he went into the bedroom, changed clothes and then drank Chlorine bleach because he wanted to die with his wife, according to the report.
Stewart-Dick worked at Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth where she helped new students adjust to college life.
"Dacota was a very friendly person, very professional but very friendly," said Dr. Grace Truman with Palm Beach State College in a statement. "I just think it's a great tragedy. I don't know that we will ever understand it. It's very, very tragic. She was a good person."
Court records show Stewart-Dick filed for divorce from Brown last September.
Brown is charged with one count of murder without premeditation.
