BSO: Woman Arrested For Trying To Hide Evidence Of Deadly Crash
POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) -- A woman involved in a deadly crash on Friday was arrested after she tried to cover-up the crime, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Benjamin Pirofsky, 30, died Friday night when the Broward Sheriffs Office says he was hit by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle in Pompano Beach.
Nadia Verdoni, 42, was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash with death and tampering with evidence.
Pirofsky is remembered by his family as an all around good-guy, always smiling, laughing and willing to give.
"He was the definition of the shirt of his back kind of guy, would do anything for anybody or help anybody, never had anything bad to say about anybody," the victim's brother Sam Pirofsky told CBS4's Gaby Fleischman over the phone from New York. "It's a loss of a young very caring person."
Pirofsky's death came just one day before he was set to move out of a relatives home and into his own place.
"He was excited about being out on his own again," said his brother. "He was really looking forward to the next chapter in his life and being a family man one day."
The deadly accident happened just after 9:30 p.m., when BSO says, Verdoni was driving a Ford SUV northbound in the left turn lane of North Federal Highway. She was trying to turn left onto NE 4th Street and turned on a solid green traffic light into the path of southbound traffic.
Pirofsky was traveling southbound, tried to brake but ended up hitting the back of Verdoni's car causing him to be ejected from the bike. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Verdoni left the scene of the crash, according to investigators.
"It was a very cowardly thing to do, to kill someone in the streets and try to drive home and cover it up," said Sam Pirofsky. "That's what she's going to have to live with the rest of her life."
BSO said a witness followed Verdoni and helped authorities track her down at her home just blocks from the scene of the crash. Investigators say they found her trying to cover up the damage to her car using a tarp.
"I'm thankful for the good Samaritan that did a very nice thing in making sure the person that did this to Ben is brought to justice," said Sam Pirofsky.
