Cognac Bandit Nabbed While In Jail

OAKLAND PARK (CBSMiami) - He was allegedly caught on video pilfering a pricey bottle of cognac on New Year's Eve. But it turns out Broward Sheriff's deputies didn't have to look far to find the alleged suspect.

BSO detectives found the alleged booze bandit Hans Kaiser, 47, at the BSO Main Jail. Kaiser was arrested previously for a January 15 grand theft in the city of Margate.

Investigators said Kaiser was seen on surveillance video as he forced open a locked, glass display case that held a $980 bottle of Hennessy Paradis Extra Rare Cognac at the ABC Wine and Spirits in Oakland Park.

BSO said Kaiser opened the case, grabbed the bottle, and then hid it under his clothing before walking out the door.

Detectives said Kaiser admitted to the crime and told detectives he sold the expensive liquor for $100 to support his drug habit.

BSO said Kaiser now faces an additional grand theft charge for the liquor heist.
