Caregiver Arrested For Striking Teen With Metal Rod

SUNRISE (CBSMiami) -- Sunrise Police arrested the caregiver of a teen after, police say, she struck a 15-year-old with a metal rod during an altercation.

According to police,  Jennifer Diane Odom allegedly got into a verbal altercation on Sunday with the child over eating some food that he was not allowed to eat.

The teen allegedly lied about eating the food and blamed it on his brother.

The caretaker was able to prove the teen was the culprit and the argument escalated to the point where Odom grabbed a broken metal rod, according to the arrest report.

The rod had come from a pair of crutches which had broken in half and been left with a jagged edge.

Odom allegedly chased the victims around the house with the rod, until the teen was able to hide behind a large 75" television. Police said, she then swung the rod at least three times, hitting the victim in the arm, cutting his skin and causing him to bleed.

All this while he allegedly shouted, "No!No!No," and tried to defend himself. The teen had to get 6 stitches.

The incident was witnessed by his siblings.

Odom was arrested January 27th. She faces a charge of aggravated child abuse.
