Police Train At S.Fla. Mall Amid Growing Concern For Public Safety

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Amid growing concern for public safety with dozens of shootings around the country over the last year, South Florida police held a drill Thursday to be ready if it happens in our own backyard.

None of it was real while the Miami-Dade Police Department trained, conducting a fake shooting inside a South Dade mall Thursday morning.

Police cruisers and yellow tape covered the parking lot. Officers rolled in and got to work looking for the fake victims and the shooters. There were even mock press conferences to help officers train for the real thing.

After an hour and a half, the bad guys were caught and Miami-Dade officers walked away with a better understanding on how to keep us safe.

"This exercise was a chance for us to enhance our skills in case of a real life scenario. Our department trains continuously to provide safety to this community," said Sgt. John Barrow of Miami-Dade Police.
