Diet? What Diet? Girl Scout Cookies Arrive In South Florida

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- For those of you trying to stay on a New Year's Diet, the Girl Scouts are about to make it more difficult because it's Girl Scout cookie time across South Florida.

The cookie sale officially starts in Miami-Dade on Thursday, January 16th.

The Girl Scouts of the USA have been selling cookies for nearly 80 years.

All of the favorites are back for a total of eight varieties of cookies, all with zero trans-fat.

The eight delicious flavors are: Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Trefoils,  Savannah Smiles,  Dulce de Leche, Thank U Berry Munch.

But for all you cookie monsters out there, be prepared to shell out $4.00 per box.

The Girl Scouts are also making it easier for folks to find and buy their coveted cookies with their cookie locator. Just type in your zip code and it'll help you find the closest location to buy the delicious treats. There's also a cookie locator mobile app for your smartphone. Just call **GSCOOKIES (**472665437) from your mobile phone.

The annual cookie sale is part of a big business for the Girl Scouts. Revenue from the sale makes up a large part of the yearly budget, so every cookie counts. The program is the largest girl-led business in the country and generates over $700 million for girls and communities across the country.

Did you know the company that makes Girl Scout cookies, Little Brownie, bakes over 4.5 million Thin Mints per day during peak baking times.

Girl Scout Cookies are also among the most requested items for women and men serving in our armed forces. Since the program began in 2009, more than 160,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies have been donated locally as part of the Cookies for the Military Campaign. You can donate online anytime or in person.

In Miami-Dade, the annual Girl Scout cookie sale runs from January 16th to February 17th. In Broward County, the cookie sale runs from January 23rd to February 16th.
