6.4 Earthquake Shakes Puerto Rico's Northern Coast

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – There were no injuries reported after a powerful earthquake rattled the island of Puerto Rico early Monday.

The center of the 6.5 magnitude quake was about 34 miles north of Hatillo off the northern coastline.

In the capital of San Jan, dozens of people reported items falling off shelves in their homes and feeling buildings sway. San Juan is approximately 59 miles from the earthquakes epicenter.

"It was so hard, for a long time, almost like 39 seconds, and I was in my bed and I felt the bed moving on and I quickly got up and looked for my dog and all that stuff," said Manuel Rivera, a reporter with Noticel San Juan.

There were no reports of any major damage to buildings.

On Sunday, Jan. 12th, many in South Florida's Haitian community marked the fourth anniversary of devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake which struck near Port au Prince and killed more than 300,000 people.
