Prosecutors Dismiss Case Against Paraguayan President's Son

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) —  The son of Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes has been let off the hook after South Florida authorities dropped their assault case against him.

The charges against Juan Pablo Cartes Montana stemmed from an October altercation at a party Cartes hosted at his luxury condo in a suburb of Miami. A police report described 29-year-old Cartes arguing with a guest, asking the individual to leave and then punching the guest in the eye as security guards escorted him through the lobby.

State Attorney's Office spokesman Ed Griffith said Monday the case was dismissed because neither security officers who witnessed the incident, nor the alleged victim appeared in court. Griffith said the alleged victim had returned to his native France. He said authorities possess security video of the battery but would not prosecute without witnesses.
