New Contempt Charges For Convicted Miami Police Sergeant
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A former Miami police sergeant currently serving time for corruption offenses is facing new charges.
Federal prosecutors have charged Raul Iglesias, 41, with contempt after he allegedly posted undercover investigative recordings on a law enforcement website and on YouTube in an effort to damage the reputations of several officers who helped build the original case against him. The postings happened two days before he was to begin his four year prison sentence.
In January, 2013, Iglesias was convicted of eight counts of civil rights violations, conspiracy to possess and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine, obstruction of justice and making false official statements.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Iglesias used his position as a supervisor of the anti-narcotics unit to plant cocaine on a suspect, steal drugs and money from other suspects, obstruct justice and make false statements to federal investigators.
Iglesias is serving his time at a South Carolina correctional facility. He is scheduled for an initial appearance on the new charge in Miami federal court next week.
If convicted of the contempt charges, Iglesias faces up to life in prison.
