MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Police in Miami are searching for a killer after a man was found dead in an Overtown apartment Saturday.  The search kept some people who live in the apartment complex out of their homes for hours.

Police say the body of Robert Santos, 23,  was found shortly before 1:00 a.m. at 1132 NW 2 Avenue, a three-story a courtyard building in Overtown. He’d been shot.

The scene remained active Saturday as police secured the building and evacuated residents homicide detectives began their investigation, which lead them to a suspect whom was known to reside in the same building.

“I left here 11 last night, got here at eight this morning and haven’t even been home to go to sleep,” said Charlene Ward who lives in the building.

Police said residents were evacuated for their safety.

Police said they know who the shooter is and thought he might be inside an apartment.  Police obtained a search warrant and arrest warrant, but when heavily armed officers entered the apartment, it turned out the man they were looking for wasn’t inside.

“It makes me worried because everyone there treats everyone like family, so it’s really hard to believe,” said Ward

Residents were allowed to go home about 4:30 Saturday afternoon.

Police said they do have good leads and continue to search for the killer.
