Liberty City Gets New Vegetable Garden

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Liberty City residents will soon have the opportunity to get fresh produce from a new local garden thanks to a local nonprofit.

The nonprofit Health in the Hood provides low-income neighborhoods in South Florida with access to fresh produce and fitness programs.

On Sunday, the organization will expand its network to an abandoned lot in Liberty City, northwest of Midtown. Several dozen volunteers will grow kale, tomatoes, pole beans, collard greens and okra.

The addition marks the sixth Health in the Hood Gardens. The group already provided some produce from an existing neighborhood garden.

In addition to providing fresh, locally grown food, the nonprofit works with public schools, business and civic leaders to provide health education, access to mental health services and free fitness classes.
