MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers are the cream of the crop in the NBA’s Eastern Conference, but the separation between those two teams and the rest of the conference is striking in the first week of December.
As of Wednesday, the Heat leads the Washington Wizards by five games and is the only team in the Southeast Division over .500 at 14-4. Indiana leads the Detroit Pistons by eight games and is also the only team in the Central Division with a record over .500.
But the bottom of the barrel in the Eastern Conference is the Atlantic Division.
The division is currently led by the Boston Celtics that has an 8-12 record on the season. The Celtics have lost six of their last 10 games and has a losing record both at home and on the road. The second best team in the Atlantic Division is the Philadelphia 76ers at 7-12. The 76ers have a 2-8 record over their last 10 games.
For comparison purposes, while the Celtics lead the Atlantic Division with a losing record, only three teams in the entire Western Conference have a losing record: Sacramento (4-12), Utah (4-15), and Minnesota at (9-10).
The Eastern Conference has a total of three teams with records of .500 or better: the Heat (14-4), the Pacers (16-2), and the Wizards (9-9). All 12 other Eastern Conference teams have records of 8-10 or worse.
