Miami Marlins

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While football season is hitting the home stretch; the Miami Marlins are quietly trying to make some moves to help the team improve over last year’s second-worst season in team history.

According to Fox Sports, the Marlins have extended a free agent offer to Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The free agent catcher spent last season with the Boston Red Sox and is being looked at by multiple teams. He lives in South Florida and his switch-hitting line of .246/310/.428 is far better than anything the Marlins catchers did last season.

At the same time, while the Marlins are shopping for free agents, the team is also jettisoning a former National League Rookie of the Year. The Marlins declined to offer a contract to outfielder Chris Coghlan, just four years after he won the ROY award.

In 2009, Coghlan hit .321 with nine home runs and 47 RBI’s to win the award. Since then he has been limited by injuries to 91, 65, 39, and 70 games over the last four years and never lived up to his potential.

Last year, Coghlan hit .256 with one home run and 10 RBI’s in 195 at-bats.

The Marlins also let go of right-handed pitcher Ryan Webb who finished the 2013 season with a 4-3 record and a 4.03 ERA in 65 relief appearances. Webb made $975,000 last season as a member of the Marlins.
