Florida Atlantic Beats Florida International 21-6

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Jaquez Johnson threw three touchdown passes to lead Florida Atlantic over Florida International 21-6 on Friday.

Johnson finished 10-for-19 for 218 yards and the Owls (6-6, 4-4 Conference USA) won the 12th Annual Shula Bowl trophy, named after former NFL head coach Don Shula.

Florida Atlantic's six wins makes it eligible for a possible bowl game.

Jake Medlock was 7-for-21 for 56 yards for FIU (1-11, 1-7) before leaving in the final quarter due to injury. E.J. Hilliard was 4-for-6 for 33 yards after replacing Medlock. The Panthers offense was anemic, managing just 132 total yards. FIU's only win this season came against Southern Miss.

Florida Atlantic coach Brian Wright has won all four of his games since he took over as interim coach on Oct. 30, following the resignation of former coach Carl Pelini amid allegations of drug use.

Johnson's third touchdown pass of the game, a 23-yard strike to Alex Deleon, gave Florida Atlantic a 21-3 lead.

The Owls took a 7-0 lead on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Nexus Dorvilus in the first quarter. Dorvilus one-handed the ball in the corner of the end zone.

The Owls stretched their lead to 14-3 on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to William Dukes.

Two field goals by Austin Taylor were the only scores for FIU.
