Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado Sworn In For Second Term

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado was sworn in Friday afternoon for his second term in office.

His swearing in ceremony took place at Miami City Hall at noon.

Regalado won re-election in a landslide against three opponents. He took 78 percent of the vote.

Regalado's first time was on shaky ground as the national economy tanked, along with the stock market. Property values fell and the city reserves were way down.

In addition, he was locked in a public battle with a police chief over a series of police shootings in which black men, mostly unarmed, were killed, raising Justice Department eyebrows. And there was a here-today-gone-tomorrow series of city managers that didn't lend an air of stability.

But things have improved. City revenues are on more solid-footing and the city has been able to present balanced budgets. Regalado has worked to streamline government by seeking partnerships with the private sector, which has the responsibility of maintaining costly properties.
