Zoo Miami Names Baby Giraffe

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Visitors to Zoo Miami on Wednesday got to see something new - a newborn giraffe, named Grimm, made his public debut.

"It's a thrill every time, we have a baby giraffe, unbelievable," said Maxine McGaritey. "I feel very privileged to get to do this, I'm lucky."

Born at just under 6 feet and weighing in 152 pounds the curious little guy, named Grimm because he was born the day after Halloween, spent the morning exploring his new home.

"Right now he seems to be very curious. As a new baby he goes around, he's seeing things like the moats at the rocks, you can see how his tail curls up every once in a while and that's a little anxiety, a little curiosity of what's going on, but he seems very relaxed, very adjusted, I think he's gonna do just great," said Zoo Miami's Ron Magill.

In addition to getting used to his environment, the little guys is also adjusting to his new herd.

"It's unbelievable how it interacts with the parents and the little antelopes, come and check it out, it's like being out in the real bush," said McGarity.

"The whole interaction between the herd and the new baby, it's a wonderful thing to see the socialization," said Magill.

The giraffe, born October 30th after a 15 month pregnancy, literally dropped right into the world.

"Giraffe births are always fun because the mother doesn't lay down. The baby falls about four to six into the world and its kind of a 'hello' to the world kind of thing," said Magill.

This is the third baby for the mother giraffe, a six-year-old rare rotschild giraffe named Mia.

The father's name is Fezzik, a 16 year reticulated giraffe.
