DISH Shutting Down Company-Owned Blockbuster Video Stores & DVD By Mail

ENGLEWOOD, COLO (CBSMiami) - DISH Network announced Wednesday morning that it will close the remaining 300 company-owned Blockbuster Rental stores and end the Blockbuster DVD-by-mail distribution service.

The company said franchised and licensed stores in the U.S. and abroad will remain open for business.

"Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings," said DISH President Joseph Clayton.

The Blockbuster By Mail service is scheduled to end by mid-December and the company-owned stores will be closed by early-January 2014 according to DISH.

DISH said it will turn its focus to delivering Blockbuster @Home service to its customers and on a streaming service for everyone called Blockbuster On Demand.
