Miami Gardens Teen Gunned Down In Front Of Home

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Miami Gardens teenager died after being gunned down in front his home Monday.

Family identified the victim as 19-year-old Raymon Mills. Police said the teen was shot just before midnight near the side door of the house he lived at with his mother at NW 201st Street and NW 32nd Court. Mills' grandmother said Mills got a phone call, he went outside and that's when someone shot him in the head.

"Now I gotta bury my grandson," said Mills' grandmother Diane Cope, in tears. "It just don't make sense."

Cope said Mills' mother and brother were sleeping inside the house when they heard shots. His mother ran outside and found her son dead on the driveway.

"She just started screaming," said Cope. "Grabbed my grandson and was asking him to hold on, but he was just looking at her. For somebody to call someone out like that and shoot him in the head, that's preposterous."

Cope describes her grandson as a quiet young man, very attached to his mom. She said the family recently moved to Miami Gardens from Liberty City to get away from the violence.

"We thought moving this way would be better but it is not," she said. "Every day young people are getting killed for what reason? They're not even living to be 20."

Neighbors who head two to three gunshots said they are tired of all the violence in their community.

"We heard the shots but we couldn't believe it," said Nerissa Neyland. "Things are getting so bad. Why Miami Gardens? You know, every week we are on the news."

"I feel bad about this," said neighbor Andre Osbourne. "We need to stop the killing out here. They need to turn in the person that did it and get this killer off the street."

Police are working to determine a motive for the shooting. If you have any information you are asked to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
