Elderly Woman Dies While Walking To Church

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami Police traffic homicide detectives are investigating after a woman was struck and killed along NW 12 Ave. near NW 61 Street Monday evening.

The crash happened just after 7 o'clock.

According to an officer on scene, the driver of a burgundy pick-up truck was driving along NW 12 Ave. when he struck an elderly woman.

Relatives have identified the victim at 78-year-old Fannie Ash.

Ash was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

More than a dozen family members gathered at the hospital were devastated to learn of her passing.

Roketa Mansfield, who identified herself as Ash's daughter-in-law, said the retired hospital housekeeper was walking to church when she was struck.

"She loved everybody in the family unconditionally," Mansfield said. "It's hard to take."

Manfield complained about the lack of a traffic signal at the intersection.

Police questioned the driver of the pick-up truck after it's believed he left the scene and returned a short time later.

The driver was administered a field sobriety test.

It's not clear what charges, if any, he will face.
