Divers Carve Out Halloween Favorite

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami/FKNB) - A weekend Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest attracted 30 entrants in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Working against the pumpkins' natural buoyancy, artistic divers dove 30 feet to the sea bottom Saturday with knives to pare classic, fun-loving facial features.

Jana Vandelaar was named the overall winner with a jack-o-lantern featuring a retainer-wearing smile and she even brought down an oversized toothbrush to give the pumpkin's carved teeth a cleaning. The Key Largo diver's work was inspired by dental braces her daughter wears.

Staged about five miles off Key Largo, the offbeat contest was organized by the Amoray Dive Resort.

Entrants came from as far away as Tucson, Arizona.
