Family Of Hit & Run Victim Wants Driver Responsible To Come Forward

BROWARD (CBSMiami) – The family of a man hit by driver who fled, leaving him in critical condition, are looking for answers and want the driver responsible to come forward.

Matthew Danchak, on October 11th, was involved in a fender bender with another vehicle on the Sawgrass Expressway just north of Sample Road at 12:40 pm.

When Danchak attempted to cross the roadway to check on the other driver, according to Florida Highway Patrol, he was struck by a tractor trailer who then fled leaving Danchak badly injured. Now Danchak's family is looking for the driver responsible.

"When I first saw him I was praying to God to take my life and spare his," said his mother Mindy Danchak.

Danchak was in a coma. He suffered broken bones, his kidney and liver were lacerated as a result of the driver who struck him and then took off.

"I couldn't fathom how someone could do this and have a clean conscience," said Danchak's mother.

Danchak's sister, Melissa Echaus, is grieving and also wants the driver to come forward.

Almost a week after the accident, Danchak regained consciousness and began talking again.

"I thought I was going to hit the floor when my brother began to finally talk. I told him I love him," said Melissa.

While Danchak may have gained consciousness, due to all his internal injuries, he is still in critical condition it is possible that he could slip back into a coma.

Authorities say the car that hit Danchak is a white tractor with right front damage and was missing the lower mirror. The tractor was pulling a white box trailer and continued eastbound on the Sawgrass Expressway.

If anyone witnessed the accident or has any information, they are urged to contact Florida Highway Patrol at 954-837-4012 or Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
