Fire Erupts At Opa-locka Recycling Yard

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Thick black plumes of smoke billowed into the air Monday morning from a fire at an Opa-locka recycling yard.

The fire erupted near a two story processing machine in the yard of Trademark Metals Recycling at 3440 NW 135th Street.

"An employee noticed a small fire in the infeed pile. That pile was about 100 cars," said John Bianculli, a spokesman for Trademark Metals Recycling.

Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue crews attacked the fire from the ground and from above.  Firefighters from 28 units were able to contain the fire to one part of the yard.  They also monitored the smoke from the recycled materials to make sure it wasn't harmful.

"Right now haz-mat is on scene to monitor the materials coming out of the fire and there are no dangers posed to the area around at this point," said MDFR spokeswoman Michelle Fayed.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters had the fire mostly out by noon.  They planned to monitored it throughout the afternoon to make sure no hot spots flared up.

Bianculli says this is something employees prepare for. "That's why we train.  We train every year in case something like this happens. We have an emergency action plan.. and we have the fire department come in every year to the yard, so they know what to expect and what they need to do to put the fire out."
