Wild Ride Through Plantation Neighborhood Sends 2 To Hospital, Leaves Damage Behind

PLANTATION (CBSMiami) - Two Plantation women are recovering in the hospital after investigators say one of the women drove through the backyards of two homes before crashing into the pool cage at her own home and slamming her Mercedes into a wall.

The accident happened around 5 o'clock Friday afternoon in the Plantation Harbor neighborhood near 595 and the Florida Turnpike.

Plantation Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Joel Gordon told CBS 4 News that a driver plowed through three fences, hit a sunbather but somehow managed to avoid falling into three different pools.

"It's pretty amazing that the speed she was apparently traveling and the way she negotiated throughout that, that one she didn't wind up in the pool and two, that the woman who was struck didn't have serious life threatening injuries," Gordon said.

The brother-in-law of the woman who was struck identified her as Maya Amitzy. He said she was laying out in a lounge chair when her neighbor crashed through the fence and hit her, throwing her 15 feet. He said she was taken to the hospital and is hurt but is expected to recover.

Lauri Stilwell said she's house-sitting at the first home where the driver smashed through a fence. She said the owners are out of town with their small children.

"I'm just so happy that they weren't home, you know, because they have little girls and they're always, always in the pool every day," Stilwell said.

By nightfall investigators were still trying to determine the path the driver took and tow truck drivers had to bring in special equipment to try and remove the Mercedes, which still had its' lights flashing late into the evening.

Neighbors say the female driver--who has not been identified--has had trouble behind the wheel before taking out a mailbox and tree at another neighbor's home.

"I'm hoping she's ok and I'm hoping the lady she hit is perfectly fine," said neighbor Stephanie Turner.

And as neighbors surveyed the damage, they told us the driver has had some tough moments recently.

"I was with her right after her husband passed away," said Anne Morinelli. "The whole neighborhood is very sad. Hopefully she'll be OK."

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
