Promised Raises For Teachers Snarled In Red Tape

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) - The promise of a pay raise by Gov. Rick Scott for teachers around the state is still just that for hundreds of teachers.

A promise.

This year, Scott pledged $480 million so that teachers could get a $2,500 across the board pay raise. Legislators set aside the money, but they gave school districts leeway in how the raises could be handed out.

A top Department of Education official told legislators Wednesday that so far only 13 out of 67 school districts had completed negotiations with local unions over the pay raises. A total of $26.1 million has been spent so far.

Some districts that have handed out raises are also giving money to administrators along with teachers. Some teachers are also getting less than $2,500.

Republican legislators wanted districts to primarily link raises to performance but only two districts took that approach.
