Birchbox Takes Guesswork Out Of Beauty Product Shopping

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Shopping for beauty products, with the plethora of options, can be overwhelming. Birchbox, a company founded by Harvard Business School classmates, was created in hopes of taking some of the guesswork out of choosing products—for $10 a month.

The monthly fee gives subscribers a curated assortment of all types of products inside a pink box.

"The  way it works is you sign up give us your profile information like who you are what you look like what your preferences are and then you receive a surprise box of samples once a month. It's tailored for you and then we send you info to learn how to use product and when you find something you love—you can buy it at Birchbox com," said Katia Beauchamp, co-founder of Birchbox.

Beauchamp and her fellow classmate, Hayley Barna, founded Birchbox in 2011 while attending business school. They noticed how easy it was to buy clothes online but not beauty products.

"We thought we want to give every woman the feeling of having a beauty editor best friend which is a highly effective way of discovering products and then buy them on the internet," Beauchamp said.

Birchbox uses thousands of brands, some well-known others harder to find. In one box, hot for fall, a burgundy lipstick from Beauty is Life. Also inside, a detangler to help stop frizz, and a liquid eyeliner liner by Le Mattier de Beaute with  real precision.

Birchbox is also available for men with a subscription cost of $20 a month. Inside the box, which is not pink for men, are products like hair pomades, eye creams and a face oil especially for men who love the travel sizes.
