Palm Beach To Pay For Head Start Services

WEST PALM BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) – Putting the county's neediest children first, Palm Beach County officials have decided to fund the Head Start services in the wake of the federal government shutdown.

The board of commissioners decided Tuesday to continue Head Start programs at a cost of $1.2 million to the county through Oct. 25.

Head Start serves more than a million low-income children each year, helping prepare them for elementary school while also providing meals and health care.

According to the National Head Start Association, 23 programs across the nation have an Oct. 1 start to their federal grant cycle. Palm Beach is one of seven Head Start service providers impacted by the shutdown in Florida. Nearly 2,300 children are enrolled in the Palm Beach program.

The county may or may not be reimbursed by the federal government.
