Snail Mail Prices Going Up In January

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It's going to cost you a little more next year if you use snail mail to pay your bills or send birthday and holiday cards.

On Wednesday the U.S. Postal Service announced that slight increases for mailing letters and postcards will go into effect in January 26th, 2014.

Highlights of the new single-piece First-Class Mail pricing include:

  •  Letters (1 oz.) — 3-cent increase to 49 cents
  • Letters additional ounces — 1-cent increase to 21 cents
  • Letters to all international destinations (1 oz.) — $1.15
  • Postcards — 1-cent increase to 34 cents

Pricing for standard mail, periodicals and package services will also be adjusted as part of a filing to the Postal Regulatory Commission this Thursday.

The proposed changes are expected to generate $2 billion in increased revenue.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
