Fins & Canes Pursuing Dual 4-0 Starts For First Time Since 1992

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes both improved their record to 3-0 over the weekend, but getting both teams to 4-0 has been quite a challenge in recent years.

Both the Dolphins and Hurricanes have started off 3-0 in the same season multiple times, but that fourth win has proved elusive in almost every season the two teams have started off hot.

How elusive?

The last time the Hurricanes and the Dolphins both went 4-0 to start a season; Bill Clinton was running for his first term as President of the United States, 1992.

Both teams remained undefeated until the Dolphins lost in Week 8 to the Indianapolis Colts. UM would finish the season with an undefeated record only to get pasted in the Sugar Bowl by eventual national champion Alabama.

Looking ahead at the Dolphins schedule, they have the much tougher challenge trying to get to 4-0. The Dolphins next face the New Orleans Saints next Monday night. The Saints and its explosive offense have also started the season 3-0 and will be ready for the Fins.

The Canes have a game against the hapless University of South Florida Bulls. USF has lost to McNeese State of the Football Championship Subdivision, Michigan State, and Florida Atlantic University to start the season.

One final note about UM and the Dolphins: In 1992, both the quarterback for the Canes (Gino Toretta) and the Dolphins (Dan Marino) wore number 13. This year, both Canes quarterback Stephen Morris and Fins quarterback Ryan Tannehill wear the number 17.
