A "Survivor" First As 27th Season Kicks Off Wednesday On CBS

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The Emmy Award winning series "Survivor' returns to CBS Wednesday night for its 27th season and this time, there's a major twist.

The fall edition of "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," features former players competing with – and ultimately against – their loved ones who share the same goal: to outwit, outplay, outlast and ultimately be crowned Sole Survivor.

Blood vs. Water relationships are put to the ultimate test on Day 1, when castaways are shocked to learn they will be separated from their loved ones and have to compete against each other on separate tribes.  Meanwhile, a former castaway attempts to rehabilitate their reputation.

Alliances and relationships will be tested and bonds will be broken when mothers, daughters, brothers, spouses and partners vie against each other in the ultimate competition, raising the question: which is thicker – Blood or Water?

This edition of "Survivor" also features the return of Redemption Island, where castaways who have been eliminated from the game can seek redemption and return for a chance to win the million dollar prize.

The twist this season, however, is loved ones will be forced to choose whether to "save" their partner on Redemption Island and switch places with them, thus allowing their loved one to immediately re-enter the game, or leave them in exile to survive on their own.

The battle unfolds with a special 90-minute premiere, Wednesday September 18th at 8:00 p.m. on CBS4.

Also new this season, fans will be able to dive deeper into every episode using the CBS App for iOS s new Survivor synced second-screen experience. Catch up on full episodes of Survivor on the CBS App, and tune in for a new season of CBS.com's "Survivor After Show" with host Survivor: Micronesia winner Parvati Shallow.
