Larrañaga's UM Contract Extended Through 2022

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - University of Miami men's basketball coach Jim Larrañaga took the team to unprecedented heights last season and the school has decided to keep him around for a long time.

UM athletic director Blake James announced Thursday morning the school has extended Larrañaga's contract through May 31, 2022.

Larrañaga led Miami to its first ACC regular season and tournament championships on the way to a berth in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16.

Larrañaga won the AP, Naismith, and USBWA Henry Iba National Coach of the Year honors and was also the ACC Coach of the Year and the NABC, Basketball Times, and USBWA District Coach of the Year.

"The University of Miami is an elite academic institution, in a great geographical location, competing in the best basketball league in the country," said Larrañaga. "It has always been my goal to compete at the very highest level, so I am fortunate, and humbled, that I will be able to pursue this opportunity for the remainder of my career."

Larrañaga continued, "We want to build a tradition of excellence at the University of Miami. The most important aspect for me and our staff is to create consistency. With this extension the university has shown its commitment, and I am grateful for its confidence in our program."

UM has a rebuilding job ahead of them this season after losing their entire starting five and will begin that journey in an exhibition matchup on October 30 against Florida Tech. The season opens on November 8 against St. Francis (NY) at the BankUnited Center on UM's campus.
