Man Accused Of Stealing Patrol Car "Wanted To Drive Around For A Little Bit"

NORTH MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) -- North Miami Beach police have recovered a stolen patrol car taken by a man who said he simply "wanted to drive around for a little bit."

According to the NMB police incident report, a marked patrol car was parked on the south side of the police station at 16901 NE 19th Avenue Sunday September 1st when Stalyn Hernandez reportedly opened the unlocked car and found the key.

Without authorization, he drove off, police said.

Hernandez was spotted a short time later at the intersection of West Dixie Highway and NE 172nd Street. While stopped for a red light, officers approached Hernandez who remained behind the wheel.

According to the report, Hernandez immediately rolled down his window and stated, "I just wanted to drive around for a little bit."

Hernandez was immediately taken into custody without incident.

The patrol car was not damaged.

Hernandez was taken to jail after being charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.

He's being held on $5,000 bond.
