Fort Lauderdale PD, BSO, To Host Gun Buyback Event

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – In an effort to reduce gun violence, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and the Broward Sheriff's Office will host a gun buyback event on Saturday, September 7th.

It'll take place at the New Mount Olive Baptist Church grounds, located at 400 Northwest 9th Avenue in the City of Fort Lauderdale from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

This event, and others like it around South Florida, is held to improve public safety and remove unwanted and / or unsecured firearms from the community.

Anyone interested in turning in a firearm at this event, can do so without questions being asked.

Those who turn in guns will receive a monetary amount between $25.00 and $100.00 in Target gift cards, depending on the condition of the firearm.

The amount of the awarded gift cards will be based on the following schedule:

  • $25.00 Small pistols (.22 to .38 caliber)
  • $25.00 Any inoperable or rusted firearm
  • $50.00 All Revolvers
  • $75.00 Handguns, semi-automatic pistols (.9mm to .45 caliber)
  • $100.00 Long guns (shotguns, rifles)

Non-traditional firearms (i.e. airsoft or pellet guns) can be turned in, but will not be purchased. Both traditional and non-traditional firearms obtained through this event will be destroyed.

If you plan on turning in a gun at this buyback event, please remember these important safety tips:

  • No ammunition
  • Bring firearms unloaded and inside a secure bag or container
  • Cylinder or action open
