S. Fla. Burglars Getting Creative

CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – Some burglars are getting creative with how they bypass alarm systems and break into homes.

In the past few weeks, several residents in Coral Gables, Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay reported being burglarized where the thieves cut right through the home's glass windows.

The thieves have been able to get away with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, cash and personal items, according to police.

The reason they are getting away with the burglaries is the alarm systems at many of the homes aren't triggered.

Experts said the thieves are using some sort of glass cutter.

Cutting into the glass usually doesn't shatter or damage the door frame, things that are needed for the alarm to go off.

"They took my peace of mind, I thought for security, for safety this type of hurricane resistant glass was good enough nobody could actually break in but I prove to be mistaken," said burglary victim Javier Aguirre.

Installing motion sensors that are connected to the alarm system is the best way to prevent this crime according to police. There are even pet-friendly sensors available.
