Signs Of Trouble Before Hialeah Shooting Spree

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – There were reportedly signs of trouble before a Hialeah man went on a deadly shooting spree more than a week ago.

Esperanza Patterson, the mother of Pedro Vargas, said she was concerned about her son's infatuation with movies involving shootings, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

Public records and interviews with people who knew him indicate he had developed a pattern of harassing and threatening former co-workers. Additionally, Vargas was accused of downloading files on how to make home-made explosives.

On the night of the shootings, Vargas set the apartment he shared with his mother on fire and killed the husband and wife building managers, a family of three and a man who was returning from his son's boxing practice.

He held police at bay in an eight-hour standoff, taking two people hostage. A SWAT team eventually stormed an apartment early Saturday, rescuing both hostages and killing Vargas.
