Woman Called "Person On Interest" In Deadly Crash

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for the owner of a SUV which was involved in a deadly crash on Bird Road last month.

Fara Zaldivar is being a called a 'person of interest' in the FHP's investigation.  FHP traffic homicide investigators have been looking for her for the last ten days and believe she may have dodging them.

"We believe that she's doing every thing possible not to reach out to us.  Once again she is just a person of interest that we need to get a hold of," said FHP spokesman Trooper Joe Sanchez.

FHP investigators have called and visited Zaldivar's home on a number of occasions and believe her relatives are covering for her.

"When we contact them, you know, they don't provide us any information about where she's at," said Sanchez.  "We've made multiple phone calls to family and basically they are not offering us any assistance."

The accident happened around 1 a.m. on July 23rd at the intersection of Bird Road and SW 97th Avenue.

Carlos Pildain, 67, and his wife Dixiana were heading westbound on Bird Road when their Toyota Yaris was struck from behind in the intersection by Zaldivar's silver Cadillac Escalade which was traveling at a high rate of speed.

On impact the Yaris shot across the sidewalk and slammed into a light pole.

Pildain died on the scene. His wife was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

"There is no excuse for what they did. They just left them there to die. They didn't care at all for him. Nobody deserves that. He was a wonderful man and didn't deserve to die like that," said the couple's son Ramses Herrera when he visited his mother in the hospital last week.

The FHP found the Escalade blocks from the scene of the accident. While they've identified Zaldivar as its owner, they don't know who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
