Sheriff's Deputy Shot, Killed Man With Rifle

OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) – The Broward Sheriff's Office has released the name of the man who was shot by a deputy Wednesday afternoon after he was seen carrying a rifle into an apartment complex pool area.

Jermaine McBean, 33, who worked as an infrastructure engineer at Zimmerman Advertising, died after the sheriff's office and witnesses said he refused to obey commands to drop his weapon.

It turns out that weapon was a Winchester Model 1000 Air Rifle.

McBean's neighbors at the Green Tree apartments were shocked by what happened.

"It's very bizarre. He'd be about his business. He'd smile and get on his bike and take off," said Kevin Hall. "I didn't catch anything that made me think he was odd."

Neighbor Carlos Ferraira said he never noticed anything strange either.  Ferraira said he and McBean shared a love of motorcycles.  McBean's motorcycle and SUV remained park outside his apartment Thursday afternoon.

"He's a good guy.  We never had a problem," said Ferraira.

According to his 'Linked-in' Page, Mc Bean had a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Information Systems and a Masters degree in Telecommunications from Pace University in New York.  He spent a decade working at Pace University before moving to South Florida where he's worked at Zimmerman Advertising in Ft. Lauderdale for about a year and a half.

"The team is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our valued associate Jermaine McBean, an IT infrastructure engineer," the agency said in a statement.  "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time and we are offering all means of support to our associates while they cope with this loss."

The deputy who shot McBean, a 12-year BSO veteran, has been place on administrative assignment pending the investigation into the shooting.
