MIAMI (CBSMiami) — CBS will go back “Under the Dome” next summer.
The network has announced that the series, based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel of the same name, has been renewed for a second season.
“Under the Dome” will return in 2014 with 13 new episodes, the first of which will be penned by King himself.
“We’re excited to tell more stories about the mystery of the dome and the secrets in Chester’s Mill, and are thrilled to have the master storyteller himself, Stephen King, tell the first one of next season,” CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said in a statement.
The series centers around a small town that finds itself cut off from the outside world by a giant impenetrable and mysterious dome. Before it premiered back in June, King promised the show would be “riveting TV.”
“I love stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations, to see how some people will rise to that situation and some people will crumble from it,” the author said at the time. “So the situation draws you in, and the characters keep you coming back. And if we’re very, very lucky, people will also start to discuss, ‘Well, what is this dome? What does it mean? What’s the purpose of it?'”
King serves as an executive producer of the series along with Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.
“Under the Dome” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
