Couple Survives Being Held Hostage During Hialeah Shooting Rampage

HIALEAH (CBS4) – New details about the people held hostage and the gunman killed by police at a Hialeah apartment complex Friday night are emerging.

The hostages were taken to a hospital to be checked out after police were able to get them to safety.

They are identified by Hialeah Police as Zoeb and Sarrida Nek, both are in their 60s.

The couple lived in a fifth floor of apartment.

Police said that neither of them suffered physical injuries, but were understandably shaken up.

According to Hialeah Police detectives, Pedro Vargas, 42, was holding the couple at gunpoint.

Vargas lived in apartment 408 with his mother and Saturday night, police confirmed she was at home at the time of the shooting rampage.

A motive behind the shooting remains unclear a day later.
