Trayvon Martin

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Something positive may actually come out of the George Zimmerman trial for star prosecution witness Rachel Jeantel.

Jeantel, a South Florida high school student and friend of Trayvon Martin who was the last person to speak with Martin, was ostracized by the court of public opinion, her character attacked along with her appearance.

The teen, who was thrown into the spotlight then berated for her speech, mannerisms and “lack of education” has been given a wonderful opportunity by nationally syndicated radio host Tom Joyner.

Tuesday morning, while appearing on Joyner’s show, he offered to pay for a tutor for Rachel to finish high school, pass her SAT’s and a full ride scholarship to any HBCU (Historically Black College or University) of her choice in the country through the Tom Joyner Foundation.

Jeantel simply responded “Thank you.”

Jeantel sat down with CBS4’s Summer Knowles Monday for an exclusive interview in South Florida where she explained her perspective on the night her friend Trayvon was shot and killed by self-proclaimed neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder in last year’s shooting but the jury also was allowed to consider manslaughter.

He was found not-guilty of all charges.

Demonstrators upset with the verdict have been protesting across the country.
