Hollywood, Hallandale Beach Offering Free Sandbags

HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – In anticipation of heavy rain from what was Tropical Storm Chantal's on Friday, the cities of Hollywood and Hallandale Beach are handing out free sandbags to residents.

In Hollywood, residents of flood prone areas can pick up their bags at Public Works Yard at 1600 South Park Road until 2 p.m. Proof of Hollywood residency will be required (driver's license with Hollywood address, utility bill, etc.). There is a limit of 10 sandbags per person.

In Hallandale Beach, residents and property owners can pick up their sandbags at the Public Works compound at 630 NW 2nd Street up until 4 p.m. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per person. Proof of residency is required.

Sandbags have a limited shelf life. Once they are placed outside and become saturated, the bags begin to deteriorate. Any bags that aren't used should be stored in a dry area such as a garage or storage shed to preserve them for future use.

City officials said heavy rain associated with this system may cause localized flooding.

• Avoid driving on flooded streets. It is often difficult to determine the depth of murky water until it is too late. Unnecessary travel during flooding conditions is not advisable.

• If you are stranded in your vehicle during a flood, try to remain there until the flood water subsides. You also may attempt to walk out of the area if you can determine it is safe to do so. If you are injured, use a cell phone to call 911 or try to flag down help from someone nearby.

• Stay indoors. The safest place for you during a flood is your home.

• Do not go outside or wade in standing flood water, which can contain contaminants such as sewage and chemicals. Do not let children or pets play in flood water. Following a heavy storm, sharp debris could be hidden in the water and cause injury. Standing water also may contain harmful bacteria that could cause infection. If downed power lines are hidden under standing water, there is the risk of electrocution.

• If you are stranded in your home, remain there and try to call a neighbor or friend every hour to advise them of your status.
